How it all started…
Here’s how I kicked off the introduction of the Xchairman Selection program at FranksWine back on January 23, 2008 via email:
FranksWine has been asked to be an anchor wine merchant in the tri-state region that will feature Jonathan Newman’s “xChairman’s Selections.” This is HUGE for us! My rival has become my partner!!
Jonathan Newman, former Chairman of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, is an icon in the wine industry. Under his leadership, the 600 “state” stores became the largest buyer of California wine in the US. Jonathan revolutionized the purchasing of ultra-premium wines at low prices through the incredible buying power of Pennsylvania…and tri-state area wine lovers had grown to hunt down his Chairman Selections.
For the past few years at the shop, it’s been a little tough to compete against his prices across the state line. Now, though, Newman has left the PLCB and he’s taking his buying concept nationally…into the private sector. His new company, Newman Wine & Spirits, is offering his prestigious “xChairman Selections” to only select wine shops in the US.
In December, Jonathan spent a week in the Napa Valley meeting with the region’s top winemakers to taste through their selections. In all, he tasted through 200+ wines…and only came back with 10 selections. He shot down over 190 wines that he felt were not representative of his “xChairman Selection” program. Now that’s a pretty discriminating palate!
Here’s how it works: Even the best wineries sometimes have problems selling their best wines. Wine sitting in a warehouse is not good for cash flow! So, Jonathan goes in and offers the winery immediate cash – for a heavily discounted price.
He works out stellar deals with the world’s wineries; passes along the savings to me and I will pass them along to you…oh, I love it when a plan comes together!
The bottom line…Your goblet and your cellars will be full with quality wines at incredibly low prices!
Then the shit hit the fan…
Five months after Jonathan Newman and I kicked off the Xchairman Selection program at FranksWine… the State of Pennsylvania threatened to slap a lawsuit against me for trademark infringement. It was quickly dropped but not after much political embarrassment from the “David & Goliath”-like bad press and public outrage.
This January will be 8 years since the FranksWine Crew first placed those little silver stickers with a red X on many a bottle of wine. I pledge to continue bringing you only the best of each style of wine… we tasted through 8 Baroli to bring you the Terradavino 2010 Barolo at $29.99; we retasted the same wine 3 times from 3 separate bottles to bring you the Penfolds 2008 St Henri Shiraz at $49.99; struck a deal directly with Winemaker Bob Lindquist and scored his Syrah-based blend Qupe 2011 Maxtap Cuvee for $14.99; we didn’t really have to taste the Perrier Jouet NV Grand Brut Champagne because at $29.99 some decisions are just a no-brainer!
